My children don't behave for me the way that other people's children behave. They don't pay attention, they act crazy, they throw fits.... add to that the fact that Daddy's patience tends to be shorter with his own kids than Booray's patience with someone else's kids and you can see how a little family photo shoot can go sour fast. Next thing you know you are yelling at your kids the same way that you are always telling clients not to yell during your photo shoots.

I think the best thing to remember when photographing your own children is that many times the best pictures are not the ones you expect. This applies to all photography, really. Sometimes we spend so much time focusing on the perfect portrait that we lose sight of the emotion and fun that can make a great portrait too. I like to try and get both during a session if possible.

Let me be clear that I'm not saying that any old snapshot is great as long as everyone is having fun. This is a trend that is popular with new photographers who are weened on facebook and think that lighting, composition, etc. are all secondary. They are still just as important. The trick is to get both, personality and good photography at the same time. Be it artificial light or natural light, getting it right makes a big difference.

Just remember that some days you can work all day to get a perfect, posed picture of your family and when it's all said and done it's the one where your kids were goofing off that really captures who they are. If you can get this:

Lasting Impressions ceremonies in Clearwater Florida is posting images on their Facebook page that were shot by other photographers and claiming them as her own. Kathy Collins is the owner.

Here's the Facebook link (while it lasts)
https://www.facebook.com/OrdainedMinisterLastingImpressions

Here's an example of an image on her Facebook page:

If it looks familiar, it's because it's my wedding, shot by me and blogged here:

http://boorayphotography.blogspot.com/2012/11/wedding-on-st-pete-beach.html

The ceremony was not by her company either. She was not attached to the wedding at all and I have never worked with her.

Here's another example:

We've been looking through the images and have found pictures stolen from numerous photographers. What's especially heinous about it is that she not only posts the work as her own but she makes up lies about the people! That's Jessica and Matt on St. Pete Beach who she is calling Marissa and Robert at Treasure Island.

My wife has been laughing all day as she tracks down the original images that are stolen and reads aloud the lies she is telling. The funniest part was that she changed the name of the bride and groom and it doesn't match the monogram on the cake. LOL

I was watching "60 Minutes" recently and they had some parents from Sandy Hook on the show. They were each showing a picture of their child, now gone, and speaking a little about them. I noticed that most of the pictures were professional portraits. Aside from the emotions that I was feeling about these poor people and the tragedy they experienced, I also was thinking, "Nice that they have some professional portraits."

Then, a mother held up a picture of her son, Dylan Hockley. Professionally photographed, he was wearing a shirt with a Superman logo and beaming into space with a big smile. She said, "This is Dylan. The picture sort of sums him up perfectly."

I thought, "There it is." We photographers are always trying to educate people on the value of good, professional photography. It seems we spend so much time just trying to convince people that what we do is different than what you do when you take a snapshot with your phone. We educate, plead, cajole... "Yes, we say... you need a good wedding photographer, portrait photographer, baby photographer. Yes... we are worth the money."

"This picture sums him up perfectly."

Think about how many pictures she must have of her son. Thousands of pictures. But it's the one taken by a professional photographer that she chooses to represent her son to the world. That's the one that she thinks best shows him for who he was... one micr-second of time, frozen forever, that captured who he was.

I don't know who the photographer was... I tried to google it so I could give him credit for the shot you see above. It's a great image.

This post has been re-written a couple of times. It's hard to write about something as relatively meaningless as photography in the context of what happened at Sandy Hook. But that's the way our brains work... we bounce around, we connect to things in a thousand different ways and when you are a photographer you connect to things through images (as well as the hundreds of other ways). This is a photography blog so I write about photography. I'm glad she has some great portraits of her son. I'm glad she has one that "sums him up perfectly." I wish she didn't need it so much more now than before.

It's a tough thing. Prints are graded from 1-100 and the magic score is 80. Score less than 80 and you have a nice print but score more than 80 and you have a "merit" print. A merit print is one that is deemed worthy to take to the next level of competition (state, national..). 80 is the magic number that everyone is hoping for.

There were 112 images entered last night and 24 merits. That's 21%. That doesn't seem like many and it's even worse when you consider that one photographer in the guild who shoots commercial and landscapes received a merit for all 6 of his images (this is almost never done). Take him out of the competition and you get 106 images and 18 merits (just 16%). (59 prints received a score of 78-79)

I entered 6 images myself and had a strong feeling that one would merit. You have to understand that it's very hard to merit. All six images are great but that's not enough in competition, especially in the wedding/event category. The judges have to see something unique. Simply taking a well-posed, well-lit shot isn't enough if it's the sort of thing they have seen many times before.

I ended up with two merits, one in "Uncategorized," and one in "Weddings and Social."

I had a good feeling about the sunglasses. Still, the judges showed some restraint. Their biggest concern is that it is "kitchy." In other words, it's a "gimmick" picture. I guess they frown on using props, etc... I don't know. I think that if I had just photographed the couple normally it wouldn't have received a merit at all because that shot has been done a million times. So, I got a merit for shooting an old shot in a new way but was almost knocked down for being "kitchy."

You can see how print competition can be frustrating. :)

Every year, they have an event called, "Miracle on 7th Avenue." It's a great night of music and fun with all the proceeds going to The Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

For the last three years, I've been shooting/printing pictures of Santa at the event with the proceeds going to the cause. I always enjoy it.

Anyway, Oki's email came with a picture of the check that their parent company (Radiant Group) gave to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. I know that my contribution is nothing compared to all the hard work that others put into the various fund-raisers throughout the year but still, it's nice to know that I was in there somewhere. :)

We were swamped over the holidays with weddings and events. Then, in January I went to Imaging U.S.A., which is the national convention for the Professional Photographers Association of America. It was held in Atlanta this year and, since I live in Florida, I decided I should go since it was as close as I could hope to get without actually being in my home state. Florida's great but it takes eight hours just to leave the state by car. :)

The convention was great. Lot's of photographers to meet, workshops to attend and I got to hang out with my old friend Jodi from Ben and Jodi Photography. She spent the whole week drinking as much "sweet tea" as she could find since they just don't offer that up in Ohio.

I spent most of the time at the convention taking notes full of ideas for a speaking program. One of the big things in PPA is education and members are encouraged to "give back." I decided that I would put together a program that I could share with local chapters and spent the whole weekend brainstorming ideas. Last night I presented my program for the first time to the Lakeland PPA chapter and it went well. No one got up and left, only a few items were thrown at me, good times. :)

I had a unique opportunity last month when I was asked to shoot some images for the WWE. That's right, your humble photographer got to photograph professional wrestlers! The whole thing was green screen so that the backgrounds can be replaced for tour programs, etc. One thing I will say about the wrestlers, male and female alike, is that they were the most polite, well-mannered people you could ever hope to work with. It was a pleasure to meet them.

Finally, we wedding photographers love to complain about people who get in our way at weddings. We call these people "Uncle Bob" and usually it's someone who owns a nice camera and in their eagerness to "get the shot" at a wedding they end up blocking us. It's just one of those things... everybody likes to complain about something so we complain about Uncle Bob.

Well, just let me say for the record that not all "Uncle Bob's" are created equal. (I've written about them here.) At my wedding on New Year's Eve, I met a man who was using a camera that he had bought some 60 years ago for his own wedding. It shot film!

When a man at your wedding has a camera that is older than you are, he get's to do whatever he wants to do. :)

I'll admit it, I'm the worst when it comes to blogging my weddings. My photographer friends here in Tampa seem to be so good at getting a bunch of pictures from their wedding on to their blog as quickly as possible. For me, it seems like there's always one other thing on my list that I need to do before I can finally get around to updating the blog. :-)

Luckily, every so often, I get a great reminder from a client like Jessica. Jessica lives in California and came all the way here to Tampa to get married. She just received her wedding album in the mail today and she wrote me an email to tell me how much she loved it. It was a great reminder to me to be sure and put some pictures from her wedding on my blog so everyone can see them. (… Did you notice how I managed to sneak in a little complement to me in this paragraph?)

Jessica and Matt were married on the beach in what might have been the windiest beach wedding I shot all year. No matter, they were great sports about the weather and had a fantastic wedding. It was a real joy working with them.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the wedding:

But wait, I'm not going to post images from the wedding. I have to laugh at myself because as I was writing this blog and preparing to post these images while complaining that I never update my blog, I realized that I'd actually already posted Jessica and Matt's entire album onto the blog. It's three posts before this one. LOL

My blogging skills leave a lot to be desired.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02481770867154322658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-557459249731421159.post-82743484867103888842012-12-20T17:39:00.001-08:002012-12-21T11:16:57.947-08:00Wedding Photography and The Cell-Phone Face
There's a new trend that I've been witnessing at weddings in the last year or so. It's one of those things that you see happening and you realize that there's nothing you can do about it. It's going to keep happening, it's going to get worse, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Still, I think it's interesting so I wanted to take a few minutes to point it out.

I don't want you to think that I'm complaining or being whiny... not because I'm not capable of being complaining and whining… Oh yes, I'm very capable… But rather because, as I said, I don't really think there's anything that can be done about this problem. I also think that it's the sort of thing that only wedding photographers really notice so it might be interesting to folks who don't see weddings the way that we do. :)

Everybody has a camera with them all the time now. Most people don't even carry a camera anymore, they just use the camera that is built into their cell phone. The negative effect that this is having on wedding photography is that it's getting harder and harder to take pictures of people at a wedding and capture emotion and expressions. It seems like, more and more, when I scan the crowd with my camera looking for that moment of emotion and tenderness all I see our faces blocked by a camera phone... or faces looking down at the picture that they just took with their camera phone.

As I mentioned when I started this blog post, I don't think that there's anything we can do about this. The camera phone is here to stay. The current generation of young people (kids that are the age of my children) sees no distinction between witnessing something and photographing it. To them these two things are one and the same. If they see it, they should take a picture of it. I don't see this going away anytime soon. In fact I suspect it's only a matter of time before you can wear a special pair of glasses that simply videotapes everything you look at.

But as a wedding photographer, it's disheartening. We photographers tend to pay a great deal of attention to the "little things." So, while most people don't really notice that the father of the bride has a camera in front of the his face while his daughter is dancing with his son-in-law, we do. We spend hours looking over these images as we work on them in the days following a wedding and so we start to notice when images are looking different over time. The picture of the bride walking down the aisle with every head turned to look at her is now a thing of the past. It's been replaced by a picture of the bride walking down the aisle with half the people at the ceremony looking at the phone in front of their face and the other half ignoring the bride as they look down at the picture they just snapped.

It would be great if there was a way to ask people, in a very polite and nice way, to please not take pictures during the special "events" at a wedding. If we could somehow start a tradition where people did not use their camera phones during the bride's walk down the aisle, or the first dance as husband and wife, etc.… But instead only use them to take fun pictures of their friends, people at the table, their crazy uncle doing the "Cupid shuffle," ...that would be awesome. Hey, the pictures that I'm taking will be on Facebook in a couple of weeks so why not put the phone down so that your face will be visible in the pictures?

But, of course, that'll never happen and you can't blame them. I'm a photographer. I love to take pictures! No surprise that everyone else does, too. :)

It's just wishful thinking for us wedding photographers who live for those moments when we catch real emotion.

Luckily, the bride and groom still leave their cell phones at home. :)
Last night was the holiday party for T.A.P.P.A. (Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association). The great thing about holiday parties is that it gives everyone an excuse to dress up. Also, there's a bar.

Every year, someone in the association is named "Photographer of the Year." The criteria has changed a little over the years. It used to be that the honor was based on who won the most ribbons in print competitions throughout the year but now they also award points for service to the guild. It's a good system because you can't "win" just by winning print competitions and you can't "win" just by serving on the board or chairing a committee... you have to do both. I like that it's given to photographers who win competitions but also give their time to servicing the guild.

This year we actually had a tie for 1st place so we had two "Photographers of the Year." Great guys who well deserved the honor.

What came as a surprise was that they also gave out plaques for the most points in each individual category of print competition. There are five categories (Wedding and Events, Portraits, Electronic Imaging, Commercial and Uncategorized). I didn't realize that they gave plaques for each category so it was a pleasant surprise when I won the "Event" category. :)

I got a little plaque and everything!
What a great couple! They flew all the way from California to get married here with their family in attendance. They even had the reception outside at the beach as well!

I photograph a lot of small, beach weddings in addition to the typical large affairs. One of the things that smaller, more budget conscious brides tend to leave out is a wedding album. Jessica and Matt decided to preserve their day with our full-size, custom leather album! Here's what it looks like:
If you've never been to the Don Vincente, it's a great hotel. There's nothing we photographers love more than texture and "feel" in a location and the Don Vincente has it all. The rooms have great furniture, the staircase is awesome and of course you have all of downtown Ybor to play with when it comes to shooting great pictures of the bride and groom.

I took so many great images that day but here are a few select favorites:

The wedding had a "masquerade" theme. Everyone had masks!

The rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows which makes for great light. One of the secrets to getting dynamic black and white images is to have good natural light.
Robyn had a perfect dress and the "birdcage" veil was just the right "old-world" touch to blend with the classic hotel.
He had been sick for a long time and finally it caught up with him.

His illness had reached the point where he needed to go into hospice care. He packed light, not taking much with him as he left the house for the last time. On the way out the door, his wife asked him if he was sure there wasn't anything else he wanted to take with him. He stopped, turned around and went back in, emerging with a photograph of himself and his grandson.

I shot that picture.

A few months back the family hired me to take some portraits. We decided to do the session in their home for convenience. In addition to a collection of posed family portraits, I also took some candid shots. One of those shots was purchased and framed and eventually carried to hospice.

I meet a lot of people who want to be photographers. Many of them ask for my help and I try to teach them what I've learned. Most fall away soon after realizing that there is a big difference between photography as a hobby and photography as a job. The commitment and training required to do it for a living is usually far beyond what most people are expecting. (this is especially true of wedding photography)

But the rewards can be great.

I've had the biggest hugs from brides when they see their wedding images. I've had a grandmother leave the room because she was overwhelmed by pictures of her grandchildren. I've had a dying man take my picture with him to his final destination in this life.

The rewards can be great indeed.

More and more, you see wedding photographers who are encouraging the bride and groom to see each other on their wedding day, before the actual ceremony. Here in Tampa Bay we get a fair amount of couples who meet before the ceremony, often because it's hard to avoid if they are getting married on the beach.

I always encourage my clients to do a "reveal" before the ceremony. Most decline because they want to preserve the surprise for the walk down the aisle. I don't push it at all... I don't really care much either way. What's important is that the couple are happy with their decision. I'm not unhappy if they don't want to do it.

That being said, I'm now going to tell you why you should do a reveal before the wedding.

Think about it: You want your husband to see you in that dress and be knocked out. You want him to have an emotional reaction and you want to see it and share it. So, you reveal yourself to him in your dress for the first time, 50 feet away in a room full of people who are standing and staring at you both, with your father walking next to you! Your husband will be having an emotional reaction but he will be fighting it with everything he's got because he's being stared at by 150 people and your Dad! No man wants to start crying in front of his father-in-law. If he does have an emotional reaction, you can't see it because you're in the back of the room. Add to that the fact that both of you are trying to concentrate on the ceremony (so complex that it requires a full-rehearsal) and you realize that there is a very special moment here that is being shoved aside for other concerns.

Allow your husband to see you in your dress for the first time in a setting where he can truly take it in and relish the moment. He wants to hold you... he wants to kiss you... he wants to tell you how beautiful you look. He can't do any of that during the ceremony. He has to wait until it's all over to tell you how incredible you look and by then the rush of the moment is gone.

Let me make it easy for you. If a man is going to propose to you, would you rather he do it in an intimate setting with just the two of you or on the Jumbo-tron at a ballgame? My guess is that you picked the intimate setting. It's hard to be "in the moment" with 50,000 people staring at you.

Do a "reveal." Allow yourself to have a special, intimate moment before the wedding that is yours and yours alone. Then, go do the ceremony as a team. You'll both be more relaxed and confident. Don't worry, there are still 150 people who are going to gasp and cry when you appear.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, you also get great pictures. :)

Last night was the monthly meeting of T.A.P.P.A., the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association and, as usual, I entered three images in the print competition. I entered in the "Weddings and Social" Category.

I won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place! Woo-Hoo!

The only problem is that I was the only person who entered this month. :)

I just don't feel right bragging about a sweep when it was a lock from the start so I'm coming clean on this one!

However, it did afford me the chance to see how my images stack up against each other. I often find that other photographers rate my images in a different order than I do so I purposely entered three distinctly different images to see if they would rank in the order that I would put them in.

They did.

Here they are: 1st, 2nd and 3rd!

Still an educational night for me. Chuck Vosbergh, a great photographer, told me that he voted for #2 because he liked the motion and energy. I'm always happy to hear what other photographers think about my images.
I also wonder about image #3 and wonder if it would have ranked higher if I had included the original image before being retouched. There is actually a strobe sitting on a tripod right in front of the couple, providing the light. I think that most people assume that the light on the couple is from the sun. Would someone rank that image higher if they knew that it required a strobe that was then removed with Photoshop? Is a picture "better" if it's harder to do? I don't know but it's a good question...

The Florida Professional Photographers Association has voted to accept a new member designation, "Non-Professional Photographer." In the past, to be a member in the guild you had to have a business license. They are now moving toward letting photographers join who are pure hobby shooters. I think it's a good idea. I meet people all the time who are passionate about photography but don't want to get a business license just so they can join the guild. These are people who would benefit enormously from the programs that we offer and the mentoring of professionals who are available to teach them how to excel at their hobby. It will be nice to be able to bring some of these people into the guild. Imagine being someone who loves photography and who can now sit down and have dinner with a table full of professionals every month and ask questions about technique, lighting, etc...
Naturally, I think that I rock all four types but my point is not so much to make myself look good but to help you see light in a different way. There are many photographers in Tampa Bay who can do what I do and the first step towards finding the right one for you is understanding a little about how they use light.

1. Natural Light
Every photographer learns early how to place someone in front of a window to get good light. What I like to see is someone who uses natural light in a more artistic way than just lighting the face. A big, natural light source can provide something that our flashes and umbrellas can't. The trick is to be able to recognize it when you see it and use it to your advantage.

I'll be honest, there was a time when I didn't see light the way I do now. I used to think only in terms of how I could use light to illuminate my subjects. I started getting more creative when I started seeing that light could also be a way to isolate my subjects.

2. Off-Camera Light
I've written about this many times. Any photographer who uses OCL will tell you that it is a game-changer. Having the right equipment and knowing how to see a scene and light it quickly is huge when you only have a few minutes with your bride and groom.

For this image, you need to first be able to see the composition in advance and know how to frame it. Do you zoom in close or shoot wide? Stand straight or crouch? Then... where does the light go, how do I pose the couple for maximum impact and finally, how do I set up the camera and the light so that I see everything the way I want it to be seen? I conceived, posed, set-up and shot this image in under 2 minutes. That's all the time I had...

Still, there are things I might do differently if I had more time to think about it but that's always the case. We photographers are constantly second-guessing ourselves.

3. Bounce-Flash
Bounce-flash is the bread-and-butter of flash photography. 95% of what I shoot indoors is shot with bounce flash. The thing to remember about bounce-flash is that it's not just the posed shots that benefit from it's use, it's every shot. Let me show you what I mean..

Here's a shot of the Maid-of-Honor giving her toast. I took this with the flash on my camera, pointed straight ahead. I never, ever shoot with my flash pointed straight ahead but I've found that it's easier to explain this sort of stuff if you can show the bad with the good so folks can see the difference. So, I shot one image with the flash pointed straight at the subjects.

Then, I went back to bouncing my flash into the vestibule that is off-camera left:

See the difference? Now it looks like the subjects are lit naturally by a large window to their right. That's what bounce-flash can do. While off-camera-light is used primarily for flashy, portrait type images where the photographer is running the show, bounce-flash is used when the photographer is shooting fast and loose, trying to capture everything but still working to make things look good. The tricky part is figuring out where to stand and where to point your flash to get the best result, all in a split-second. Then you have to adjust your flash settings and your camera based on the room and the available light.

4. Video Light
When I list video light as one of the types of light a photographer needs to know how to use, I don't mean he needs to know how to set one up as a light source for his images. I mean he needs to know how to use one that he has no control over: The one on the videographer's camera.

Video lights create a unique challenge at a wedding because they are a light source that is constantly moving. We have to factor the videographer into everything we do, on-the-fly. While there are certainly times that you wish they weren't there (and they feel the same way about us, I'm sure..) they can also be an asset and used to our advantage. But again, we have to be fast.

When Kristen and Shawn were about to exit the reception, I had to figure out a way to light them fast (sparklers burn out quickly). There was no time to set up OCL and no place to bounce my flash so that left me with no choice but to use straight, direct flash... which I hate to do. That's when I started looking for the videographer. I knew if I could position myself so that the video light was acting like an off-camera-light, I could get a better, more flattering light. So I moved into position and dialed my camera settings to the limit, squeezing every ounce of light I could into the lens. (video lights are bright but not nearly as bright as flashes)

Notice the way the light falls off across the grooms face from left to right? That's because it's the videographer's light (to my left) that is illuminating them, not my on-camera flash. Had I used my on-camera flash, they would be "flat-lit" as we call it and the sparkler would be blown out.

Hopefully, this post will help you to see that a good photographer can work with many types of light to create great images quickly. That's who you want at your wedding...
Whenever I see another photographer, I can usually figure out where their skill level is at within a few seconds. The one thing that is an instant tip-off is the way they use light motifiers when shooting outdoors.

Now, I know that a lot of folks who read my blog aren't photographers so I'm going to try to explain this in laymen's terms...

There is a light modifier called an Omni-Bounce. It's a little white plastic cap that fits over the end of your flash. Here's one for sale on Amazon. I think that some Nikon flashes come with a free one.

The purpose of this little cap is to take the light that is shooting out from the flash and make it go off in every direction. The light hits the plastic and basically turns it into a lamp that shoots light everywhere, instead of just straight ahead. The light then "bounces" off all the surface in the room (walls, ceilings, etc) and fills the room with light. This is where the "bounce" comes from in the name.

When taking pictures outdoors, there are no walls or ceiling. So, if you put an Omni-Bounce on your flash, all it does is take some of the light and divert it away from your subject where it is lost forever because there is nothing out there to bounce off. Because you have "stolen" some of the light, the flash has to produce more light than usual to light the subject. Sometime twice as much. When you are working outdoors in bright sun, you are frequently squeezing every bit of power out of your flash because the shadows are so dark that you have to overcome. The last thing you want to do is cut the flash's power in half.

Yet, I see photographers shooting outdoors with these diffusers all the time.

It wouldn't be so bad except that the internet is full of posts just like this one: Professional photographers begging people to at least read the directions on the thing!

Here, let me show you. One of these picture was taken with the flash pointed at the subject and the other with an Omni-Bounce:

See the difference? No? My point exactly.

But wait! There's more!

Not only do I see people using these diffusers when they are outside, but (this is the best part) they use them wrong when they are inside!

Allow me to explain:

The Omni-Bounce and it's bretheren are designed to bounce light primarily off the ceiling, with the rest of the light bouncing around the room. Some is also thrown forward. If you read the directions it clearly tells you that your flash should be tilted at a 45 degree angle. I see people with their flash pointed straight at the subject, with an Omni-Bounce, all the time.

These diffusers are good for one thing only: Tilt your flash at 45 degrees, be indoors where there are surfaces to bounce the light, and you will get a wider, flatter light from your flash. Outdoors they do nothing but reduce the power of your flash.

I own one but only use it with off-camera lighting when I want to light a room. I never use it on my on-camera flash because it's never as good as true bounce flash, which is more directional and pleasing (I'm losing the non-photographers here... sorry ).

I'm not saying you have to learn to use off-camera lighting, etc., to be a photographer but please stop using these indoor tools outdoors. It makes you look like someone who doesn't care about their work. If you've been a photographer for less than 6 months, fine but after that you should have learned how to use the thing properly. There is no tool in photography that is an all-purpose, good no matter where you are, thing. You have to study and train constantly to get the best results from the tools you have. Start by learning how light works.

End of rant. :)
Last night we were at the theater for seven hours for dress rehearsal. I was able to snap a few pictures of the Senior Dancers during the rehearsal (as well as about 200 pictures of my two daughters! They're on Facebook...). Here are a few of my favorites:
Tonight's the big show and I have to go get dressed so it's a quick blog post! No camera's allowed during the performance so I get to relax for a change!
It started four years ago when they were just babies and now it's to the point that we spend most of our lives at the studio, at competitions, at recital... or at the store buying tights, shoes, etc. :)

The first year that we joined dance, Sandy Karl, the owner, asked me if I would take over as photographer for the school. There are photographers who market to the dance schools but I'm not really one of them. However, I was happy to say yes because it would be a welcome break from my usual busy wedding and event schedule.

It's been four years now and I'm so glad I decided to take it on. Every year I see a new crop of tots coming into dance for the first time with their little costumes. Every year I see the older girls getting older and growing up before my eyes.

The Senior Company girls all know me by name as I have been photographing them since they were pre-teens. Every year I try to remember to jump into a picture with the girls so I have a great momento of my time at the studio. The girls are great about posing for me and giving there all for the camera!

I couldn't ask for a nicer group of girls. It's always a pleasure to photograph them!

Last weekend I had a great "Uncle Bob" experience.

If you don't already know, "Uncle Bob" is an industry term we photographers use for the person at the wedding who thinks they are a professional wedding photographer. Not to be confused with the guests who bring cameras and snap photographs all day... Uncle Bob has an expensive DSLR and is determined to photograph the wedding like a pro. What he ends up doing, is getting in the way of the actual hired photographer, spoiling shots and annoying people.

But not always.

Last weekend, my Uncle Bob was the sister of the groom. She has a Nikon Camera, she loves to take a photograph, so don't take her Kodachrome away (Paul Simon FTW!) But she was cooool. In fact, she was the perfect example of how you should act if you bring your big camera to a wedding.

We photographers notice things. We notice when you are about to take a bad picture, when you are about to take a good one and when you are about to take a good one and you know you are about to take a good one. So, when I noticed a guest taking a picture of the flower girls before the ceremony, in a crouch with one foot holding open a door behind her to let in natural light... my ears perked up. "Uncle Bob," I thought. But I also thought, "Uncle Bob has some skills."

During the ceremony she never left her seat. During the formals she never took a picture (that I noticed). However, she did point out several details to her family members when they were posing. Little things like a stray hair or a hand out of place. Good things to notice.

She introduced herself to me, told me she was a serious hobbyist and said, "Please let me know if I get in your way at all." Thank you!

She didn't bring a flash, just a 50mm f1.8 lens. She stayed back and worked on low-light candid shots.

She never got in my way and was a complete joy.

We wedding photographers can get a bad rap sometimes. Many of us have been accused of being grumpy and rude and there are some of us who are sometimes. But most aren't... we are just under a lot of pressure and we don't always have time to explain why you shouldn't be on the dance floor during the couples first dance because you want to practice. You are in our way and worse, you are in the shot. So when we come across someone who is passionate about photography and also conscious of the job we are doing and respectful of the boundaries, we love them. :)
Picture CompetitionThis month's T.A.P.P.A. meeting was a good one. We had a photographer come speak about his work with pets and he did a live demonstration. Michael J. brought studio equipment and borrowed a dog from a member to photograph.

It's always great when a speaker does a "hands on" demonstration. I felt bad for Michael because the dog, a little collie, just refused to look at him. Michael was growling, barking, throwing towels and waving treats around and the collie just looked around like a bored Diva. It's not his fault, of course, you don't usually have 40 people standing around when working with pets. :)

Despite the challenges, Michael got some great shots.

I entered two images in the print competition this month. I won third place in "Weddings and Events" for this images:

... and first place with this image:

I also entered an album (which I rarely do...) because they needed one to fill out the category. Most photographers don't have a lot of albums sitting around so we go months without having anyone enter an album in the monthly salon. Last night, one of the members posted on Facebook that he was bringing some albums so I brought one too. I won second place. :)
